VOLUNTEERS BACK IN THE WOODS

Right, woodland warriors… your time has come!

Since the end of March, we’ve stood back and let Mother Nature have the woodland to herself.

No saws. No spades. No cutting back. Just quiet respect while she got on with the important business of nesting, breeding, flowering, growing and bringing new life into every hedge, pond, hollow and hidden corner.

And you’ve all been waiting proudly and patiently in the wings…

Mother Nature has given it everything. The woodland has burst into life and now some of those paths are narrowing, the brambles are reaching out and the woodland is becoming wonderfully wild around the edges.

So it’s time for us to step back in and take up our role as its guardians and caretakers.

We’ll be cutting back, digging out and opening up paths, coppicing the woodland in rotation, carefully opening and caring for different areas to create a changing mosaic of habitats. We’re creating sunlight, new growth, deadwood, shelter, food and space all the things that the woodland’s creatures need at different stages of their lives.

A woodland needs light and shade, young growth and old trees, dense cover and open spaces. Our job is to help create that balance with love, care and respect for every creature that calls Coed y Werin home. We waited while Mother Nature had her turn.

Now she’s handing the baton back to us.
