About Caerphilly Woodlands Trust

Coed y Werin is privately owned by the Caerphilly Woodlands Trust (CWT) Charity and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The land, once known as ‘the claypits’ renamed ‘Coed y Werin’ – ‘Peoples Woods’, was purchased by the Trust in 2002 to prevent the site from being used as landfill. The charity was established in 2002 when it worked alongside the Forestry Commission and other local partners to save the woodlands (comprising of ‘the Warren’, ‘Wernddu Woods’ and ‘Coed-Y-Fan’) from the threat of development.
In April 2003, CWT became the sole and permanent owners of approximately 23 acres of woodland within ‘the Warren’. The woodland was re-named by its members as Coed-Y-Werin to reflect the role of CWT- to preserve and protect the woodland on behalf of the people of Caerphilly.
Today Coed y Werin is now a rich terrestrial habitat for wildlife, home and safe haven to some of the most endangered species in the UK which are all carefully managed by the group’s members and volunteers.
Today’s current Chair is Jayne Garland, the treasurer – Vernon John and secretary is Naomi Carroll.

National Forest for Wales Status
Our Woodland and the National Forest for Wales: Meeting the Standard
We are proud that our woodland has been recognised as part of the National Forest for Wales, a mark of quality, sustainability, and long-term value. This recognition confirms that our site is a well-managed woodland contributing meaningfully to Wales’ vision for a resilient, nature-rich future.
At the heart of our approach is a commitment to sustainable management. Our practices ensure the long-term health of the woodland, enhancing biodiversity while also securing its value as a community and ecological resource. Through active conservation work, we protect and nurture a wide range of native species, helping reverse the decline in local wildlife.
We also prioritise community access and engagement. Our woodland is open and welcoming, with paths, signage, and activities that encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to explore, learn from, and connect with nature. Regular events, volunteering opportunities, and educational sessions deepen this connection, fostering a sense of shared ownership and responsibility for the woodland’s future.
Moreover, our woodland plays a part in tackling the nature and climate emergencies. By protecting existing trees and planting new ones, we support carbon capture, reduce flood risk, and improve local air quality, while creating a richer, more diverse landscape for future generations.
Being part of the National Forest is not just a status; it’s a shared commitment. We are proud to contribute to a connected network of woodlands that will serve Wales’ people and nature for generations to come.
