A Day of Discovery in Coed y Werin Woodland

We had a wonderful day in the woodland with a group of 12 children, enjoying a carefully planned programme of outdoor learning, exploration, and hands-on activities.

The session was designed to be calm, engaging, and fully supportive, allowing every child to take part with confidence and enjoyment.

We began at the entrance to the woodland, where the children were introduced to an owl box that was soon be installed. This sparked thoughtful discussion about owls, their habitats, and the importance of caring for the gentle creatures that share the woodland with us. The children showed great curiosity and respect, setting a positive tone for the day.

As we moved through the woodland, the children explored its history and natural features, learning how the landscape has changed over time and how it is now carefully protected for wildlife and its landscape. They listened well, asked questions in their own ways, and showed real interest in the world around them and here in the picture below they learned how coal was formed from plants over millions and millions of years.

At the main activity area, the children took part in practical woodland skills, including learning about shelter, fire safety, and tools. With close guidance, they explored how kindling is made, experimented with flint and steel to create sparks, and worked together to complete a woodland owl craft to take home.

Each child approached these activities with focus and pride, celebrating their own achievements along the way.

A Parliament of Owls

The day ended with packed lunches, a toasted marshmallow, and a warm drink prepared on the fire, providing a relaxed and cosy moment to reflect and enjoy being together outdoors.

Throughout the visit, the children demonstrated confidence, teamwork, curiosity, and care for the woodland environment. It was a pleasure to see them trying new things, supporting one another, and taking pride in what they accomplished. Each child left with positive memories, new skills, and a strong sense of connection to the woodland.

It was such a Hoot
