Join our Bat Night at Coed y Werin

Saturday 18th July β’ 9:00 PM
As the sun sets and darkness gathers beneath the trees, Coed y Werin comes alive with the woodland night shift.
Join ecologist Dr Alex Wilson for a magical summer evening discovering the hidden world of bats and moths. Using bat detectors, we’ll listen to the secret calls of pipistrelles, noctules and other night-flying hunters as they emerge from their roosts and sweep through the woodland sky.
Children are especially welcome to bring torches and explore the woods after dark β an adventure that transforms the familiar woodland into a world of mystery, movement and sound. No school in the morning, no early morning alarm clocks, it’s a Saturday night, a night made for woodland adventures after dark.
Expect:
π¦ Live bat detecting
π A guided dusk woodland walk
π¦ Moths and night pollinators
π¦ Torchlit woodland exploration
π² The magic of Coed y Werin after dark
Last year, families watched pipistrelles dance overhead while detectors crackled with echolocation calls, and youngsters lit the woodland paths with their torches as dusk folded into darkness.

Bats are wonderful creatures but often misunderstood. Telling the different species apart by sight can be difficult, but this guide by the Natural History Museum, outlines key details to look out for to identify five of our most common species, including echolocation calls (high-pitched sounds that bats use to navigate and hunt) for those with access to a bat detector

The children can even recite the ‘Watchers Charm’ to start the evening off
