🍄 Hidden Gems Beneath Our Feet

There is a whole world hiding beneath our feet. Walk through Coed y Werin in autumn and the woodland floor may look like little more than fallen leaves, moss, twigs and the fading remains of summer.

Amongst that leaf litter, beneath fallen branches and tucked away in the moss, an extraordinary world begins to reveal itself.

We’re delighted that Chris Jones of Natur Hud will once again be joining us to share his incredible breadth of knowledge, enthusiasm and fascination for the wonderful world of fungi.

Our last fungi walk proved incredibly popular, and we already have people waiting for the next opportunity to join us. That means places for this session are very limited.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what those strange shapes, colours and textures appearing across the woodland floor actually are, this could be your chance to find out.

  • When: Sunday 4th October 2026
  • Where: Coed y Werin Woodland
  • Time: 10:00 to 12:30
  • Booking details: cwtcoedywerin@gmail.com.

You never quite know what Coed y Werin will reveal. Perhaps we’ll find the delicate Snowy Waxcap, its pale fruiting body standing out amongst the autumn colours. Maybe we’ll stumble across a Chanterelle, hidden amongst the leaves.

There could be Slimy Waxcaps, their unusual appearance making them impossible to miss once you know where to look, or perhaps the woodland will reveal one of its more magical treasures…
Scarlet Elf Cups, glowing like tiny woodland goblets amongst the moss and fallen branches.
Scarlet Hood fungi, adding flashes of colour to the woodland floor. And those are just a tiny few of the mysteries that may be waiting for us. Because fungi aren’t simply something interesting to spot on a woodland walk. They are fundamental to the life of the woodland.

They help break down dead wood and leaf litter, recycle nutrients and form extraordinary relationships with plants and trees. Much of their lives take place out of sight, beneath our feet or hidden within the woodland itself.

A fungi walk changes the way you look at a woodland. Suddenly, a fallen branch isn’t just a fallen branch. A patch of moss might be hiding something remarkable. A splash of colour amongst the leaves catches your eye. And what once looked like an ordinary woodland floor becomes a place full of clues, connections and tiny wonders.

Chris has a wonderful ability to share that sense of curiosity and discovery, helping us to look more closely and understand the fascinating organisms that live alongside us.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t even need to know the names of fungi. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to look a little closer. Who knows what Coed y Werin might reveal?

Come and explore the hidden world of fungi with us and discover just how much life is hiding amongst the leaf litter.

Don’t forget, places are very limited and are now available to book. We’d love you to join us.
